Cape Verde reach World Cup knockout stage after Saudi draw
Cape Verde extended their remarkable FIFA World Cup debut by reaching the knockout stage after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia on Friday.
The result confirmed the Blue Sharks as the smallest nation ever to progress beyond the group stage of the tournament, completing one of the most memorable underdog stories of the competition.
Cape Verde finished second in their group with three points from three draws, behind Spain, who secured top spot with a victory over Uruguay.
The island nation had already caught attention earlier in the tournament after holding Spain to a goalless draw and then earning a 2-2 draw against Uruguay.
Their latest point against Saudi Arabia proved enough to send them into the Round of 32, where they will face defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was once again central to Cape Verde`s success. The 40-year-old produced several important saves, including a sharp stop from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat in the second half and another key intervention late in stoppage time.
Saudi Arabia pushed for the goal they needed, but Cape Verde remained organised defensively and protected the clean sheet under growing pressure.
Cape Verde also created chances of their own. Kevin Pina went close early in the second half, while Laros Duarte was denied by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais. Nuno da Costa also missed a late opportunity to win the match.
The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among Cape Verde players and supporters, many of whom had travelled to witness the country`s historic achievement.
With a population of just over 500,000, Cape Verde have now joined a rare group of teams to advance from a World Cup group without winning a match.
For head coach Bubista and his players, the qualification marks a defining moment in the country`s football history and sets up a high-profile knockout meeting with Argentina.
