Lionel Messi to play for Inter Miami until 2026

Lionel Messi has agreed to extend his contract with Inter Miami, keeping him at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club until 2026, a source from the club told AFP.

Messi’s current contract was set to expire at the end of this year, but the new deal confirms that the Argentine superstar will continue playing club football even after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Many expect that next year’s World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, could mark the end of Messi’s international career, but his commitment to Inter Miami ensures he will remain active at the club level.

AFP reports that the official announcement of the new contract could come within the next two weeks.

The extension may also mark the conclusion of Messi’s club career within MLS, at which point he will be 49 years old.

Since joining Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, Messi has made an immediate impact. He was named MLS Player of the Year in 2024 and has set a new league record this season as the fastest player to score 40 goals in MLS history.

The new contract further solidifies his role as a central figure in the growth and popularity of football in the United States.

This deal underscores Messi’s continued influence on and off the pitch and provides Inter Miami with long-term stability for the team’s performance and global recognition.
