Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times inside his own home in Mumbai.

The attacker, who has been identified as a Bangladeshi citizen, had been living illegally in India for the past few months, according to the Mumbai police.

The suspect, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, reportedly entered India without proper documentation and had been staying in Mumbai for about five months.

On Sunday (January 19), Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner Dikshit Gedam shared the details during a press briefing.

He revealed that the man was caught after breaking into the actor’s Bandra home with the intention to steal on Wednesday night.

“The investigation shows that the accused may be a Bangladeshi citizen. He has no Indian papers, and we suspect he entered illegally from Bangladesh. The matter is still under investigation, and charges under the Passport Act have been added,”

Deputy Commissioner Gedam stated.

Further investigations found that the man had changed his name to Vijay Das after sneaking into India.

He had been working with a housekeeping agency in Mumbai and was arrested from the Thane area, where he had been staying for months.

The police are now questioning him for more information.

The attacker entered Saif Ali Khan’s house through the fire exit located at the back of the building. A housemaid spotted him and immediately screamed for help.

When Saif rushed to stop him, the attacker stabbed the actor before running away.

The injured actor was quickly taken to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors say he is recovering slowly.

For context, Saif lives in a Bandra apartment called ‘Satguru Sharan Building’ with his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor, and their two children.

The attack occurred on Wednesday (January 15) in the middle of the night. Saif is currently being treated for his injuries at the hospital.

Kareena Kapoor’s team released a statement after the incident, assuring that she and their children are safe.

"Saif has injured his hand. He is currently admitted to the hospital and receiving treatment. Our family is safe. We request the media and fans to remain patient. The police are thoroughly investigating the matter. Thank you for your concern and love for Saif,"

the statement read.

Police are continuing their investigation into how the man managed to stay in India for so long without detection and how he planned the attack.
