EC issues gazettes for 297 MPs, publishes referendum results

The Election Commission has issued two separate gazette notifications formally declaring the results of the 13th parliament election and the referendum on the July National Charter, clearing the way for the swearing-in of newly elected lawmakers.

The gazettes were published on Friday night, confirming the election of 297 members of parliament.

The notifications include the names of the MPs along with their parents’ or spouses’ names and addresses, officials said.

The move allows the process of administering the oath to begin.

Under the Constitution, newly elected MPs must take oath within three days of the gazette publication.

As there is no Speaker in place following the resignation or absence of the 12th parliament Speaker, the oath will be administered by the Chief Election Commissioner or a person nominated by the President, in line with constitutional provisions.

Voting for the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum was held on Thursday in 299 out of 300 constituencies.

Polling in Sherpur-3 was cancelled earlier after the death of a contesting candidate.
The Election Commission announced unofficial results for 297 constituencies on Friday, while results for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 were kept on hold following court orders.

According to the results, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 209 of the 297 declared seats and is also leading in the two Chattogram constituencies where results are pending. BNP’s alliance partners won three seats.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats, while parties allied with the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance won nine seats.

Of these, the National Citizen Party won six seats,

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish two seats, and Khelafat Majlish one seat. Seven independent candidates also won parliamentary seats.

In the referendum, 48,200,660 voters cast ballots in favour of the ‘Yes’ option, while 22,071,726 voted ‘No’, according to the separate gazette. A total of 7,422,637 ballots were rejected.

Election officials said further steps, including the oath-taking schedule, will be announced shortly.
