The government has nominated eight distinguished individuals to receive the prestigious Independence Award this year for their remarkable and notable contributions to the nation.

An official from a high-level government source confirmed this on Thursday, March 6, adding that the formal announcement of the awardees is expected soon.

Among those nominated for the 2025 Independence Award are several figures who have made significant impacts across various fields.

These include the Chief Commander of the Liberation War, M.A.G. Osmani, whose role in the fight for Bangladesh’s independence remains deeply respected.

In the field of science, Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam, a renowned scientist, has also been selected.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, the visionary founder of BRAC, one of the world’s largest non-governmental organizations, is also on the list of honorees.

Additionally, writer and intellectual Badruddin Umar, whose contributions to literature and thought are well-regarded, and celebrated poet Al Mahmud have been nominated.

Sculptor Novera Ahmed, one of the co-designers of the iconic Central Shaheed Minar, has also been recognized for her creative legacy.

Pop legend Azam Khan, widely regarded as the pioneer of pop music in Bangladesh, is another notable nominee.

In a significant addition to the list, the late Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has also been nominated.

Abrar’s life was tragically cut short in 2019 when he was brutally murdered by members of the then-student political organization Chhatra League, which has since been banned.

His death sent shockwaves through the country and remains a powerful symbol of the dangers of political violence.

The Independence Award is the highest civilian honor in Bangladesh, and this year’s list of nominees reflects a broad spectrum of contributions—from the fight for freedom to cultural, scientific, and social progress.

The nation will soon honor these individuals for their legacy and dedication to their respective fields.
