A potential flood situation is emerging in six districts of northeastern and eastern Bangladesh—Feni, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona—due to heavy rainfall, according to the national flood forecasting authority.
Over the next two days, low-lying areas near the Muhuri River in Feni may face flooding as water levels in rivers like Gomti, Muhuri, and Feni are expected to rise significantly.
The Muhuri River is particularly at risk of crossing the danger level, although a decline in water levels is expected shortly thereafter.
In Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, rivers including the Sari-Goyain, Jadukata, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, and Someshwari are forecasted to swell over the next three days, possibly exceeding danger levels.
This raises concerns for flood conditions in river-adjacent lowlands of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona.
Meanwhile, rivers in Rangpur division—namely the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar—are also projected to rise in the coming days, with the Teesta potentially reaching near-warning levels.
Additionally, tidal surges in coastal rivers of Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions may exceed normal heights for the next two days, increasing flood vulnerability in coastal areas.
While water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are currently decreasing, a renewed rise is expected in the next three days, though likely remaining below danger thresholds. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna system is currently stable but is anticipated to rise gradually over the next four days.
The Ganges River remains steady, while Padma River levels are increasing. Both are expected to rise over the next five days but are not projected to cross flood danger levels.
The situation is being closely monitored, and residents in at-risk zones are advised to remain alert.
