Electricity output at the Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Plant has dropped sharply as water levels in Kaptai Lake continue to decline, forcing most units offline.

Officials said four out of the plant’s five units are currently shut, with only one unit in operation producing around 40 megawatts, far below the plant’s full capacity of 230 megawatts.

Plant manager Mahmud Hasan said the drop in water level during the dry season has directly affected generation.

As of Wednesday morning, the lake’s level stood significantly below the standard rule curve, limiting the ability to run multiple units.

Engineers said two units had been running in recent weeks, but rapid depletion of water forced further reduction to a single unit.

They added that normal generation is unlikely to resume until rainfall increases and the lake level recov
