Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has taken strong security steps ahead of the 13th National Parliament Election and the referendum, deploying more than 37,000 members across the country to ensure a peaceful and fair vote.
The information was shared by BGB Dhaka Sector Commander Colonel SM Abul Ehsan at a media briefing held at the Mirpur National Swimming Complex on Saturday, after he inspected several election base camps in the capital.
He said BGB members have been deployed in 489 out of the country’s 495 upazilas. In 61 border upazilas, the force is operating independently to ensure tighter security. BGB personnel will carry out both mobile patrols and static duties in all 300 parliamentary constituencies.
According to the commander, each upazila will have two to four platoons on duty. At the same time, Bangladesh’s entire 4,427-kilometre border will remain under strict surveillance during the election period.
In the Dhaka sector, 134 platoons will be stationed at 42 temporary base camps, covering 51 constituencies across nine districts and four city corporations. The deployments include members from Dhaka Battalion (5 and 26 BGB), Narayanganj Battalion (62 BGB) and Gazipur Battalion (63 BGB).
To deal with emergencies, BGB’s Rapid Action Team, Quick Response Force and Helicopter Unit will remain on standby. A K-9 Dog Squad will also be deployed for special search operations.
BGB officials said members have received special training to handle election duties professionally and without bias. Modern equipment such as body-worn cameras, night vision devices, metal detectors, armoured vehicles and advanced communication tools will be used to improve security and transparency.
Special monitoring cells have been set up at battalion and sector headquarters to watch the situation round the clock. On election day, BGB members will patrol key areas, set up checkpoints and search vehicles and suspicious individuals to prevent unrest.
BGB reaffirmed its political neutrality and said it is working under the guidance of the government and the Election Commission to ensure a fair environment for all parties and candidates.
Officials expressed hope that the 13th National Parliament Election will be held peacefully with the combined efforts of the authorities, law enforcement agencies and the public.
