A young man from Sunamganj’s Doarabazar area has been arrested following accusations of posting religiously offensive content on Facebook.
The arrest, made on Tuesday night, sparked unrest in the local community.
The youth, identified as Akash Das, hails from Monglarpur village in Doarabazar upazila.
Police say they are preparing to file a case against him for allegedly disrespecting religious sentiments.
The incident began around 8 PM when locals from the Muslim community became outraged by a Facebook post shared by Akash.
Reports also emerged that some angry individuals vandalized his home. Around 9 PM, police arrested Akash and took him to Doarabazar Police Station.
An agitated crowd gathered outside, protesting the arrest. Eventually, law enforcement, along with army personnel, stepped in to defuse the situation.
In response to the unrest, senior officials, including the district commissioner, police superintendent, and local political leaders, visited the area to assess the situation.
They urged everyone to stay calm and avoid further escalation. Security in the area has since been tightened to prevent any more disturbances.
Officer-in-Charge of Doarabazar Police Station, Zahidul Islam, confirmed that Akash is in custody and that the situation had been brought under control after intervention from police and army forces.
Superintendent of Police A F M Anwar Hossain Khan also visited the site to ensure order.
Local authorities, including Doarabazar Upazila Executive Officer Meher Nigar Tanu, reassured the public that the situation is now peaceful.
Police and army patrols have been increased to maintain security.
District Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia, who also visited the scene, appealed to residents to remain patient and not take the law into their own hands.
He emphasized the importance of handling the matter through proper legal channels.
Meanwhile, preparations for a formal case against Akash Das are underway, according to Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam.
