Bangladesh has proposed a major expansion of its workforce presence in Russia, aiming to increase the number of Bangladeshi workers employed there from around 10,000 to 100,000 within the next year.

The proposal was raised by Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman during his three-day official visit to Russia, where discussions focused on strengthening economic and development cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian authorities responded positively and agreed to work quickly on the necessary procedures to facilitate the planned increase in Bangladeshi manpower recruitment. Officials from both sides are expected to complete the required formalities in the coming months.

The labour market initiative emerged as one of the most significant outcomes of the bilateral talks, reflecting growing cooperation between Dhaka and Moscow in employment and migration sectors.

Trade and investment also featured prominently in the discussions. Both countries acknowledged that current trade volumes remain far below their potential and expressed interest in expanding commercial exchanges.

During the meetings, Dr. Rahman highlighted opportunities for increasing Bangladeshi exports to Russia, particularly in the readymade garment and pharmaceutical sectors. Russia welcomed Bangladesh’s proposal to send a business delegation in the near future to explore new market opportunities and strengthen business-to-business connections.

The two sides also discussed collaboration in technology and innovation, with a special focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Bangladesh proposed hosting a Russian delegation to share expertise on the use of AI in agriculture and healthcare, a suggestion that received an immediate positive response.

Russia further expressed interest in supporting Bangladesh‍‍`s efforts to develop a national AI policy and establish centres of excellence dedicated to artificial intelligence research and development.

Dr. Rahman is visiting Russia from June 7 to June 9 and is accompanied by Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir.
