At least 11 people have been killed and 19 others injured in a devastating fire at an orphanage in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, the country’s fire service and civil protection authorities said on Thursday.

According to state-run media, the fire broke out early Thursday morning at an orphanage near the capital, causing the casualties.

The Civil Protection Authority said the blaze started at the orphanage in Mohammadia district, an eastern suburb of Algiers. Firefighters are currently working to bring the fire under control, but the exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined.

The agency did not disclose the ages or identities of the victims, but said initial information indicated that 11 people from the orphanage had died in the fire.

The Civil Protection Authority also said that 10 of the injured suffered moderate to severe burns. Rescue teams evacuated five people with disabilities from the orphanage and moved them to a safe location.

The agency added that firefighting operations are still underway. No further details have been released immediately regarding the identities and ages of the victims or the cause of the blaze.

The incident comes as Algeria has been experiencing a severe heatwave for several weeks. The country’s state news agency APS reported that 913 fires have broken out across the country since July 8 amid the intense heat, with firefighters working to contain the blazes.
