Iran executes over 1,000 prisoners in 9 months

Iran has executed at least 1,002 prisoners in the first nine months of 2025, according to the Statistics and Documentation Center of Hengaw Organization for Human Rights. With more than 100 days still remaining in the year, the figure already represents the highest execution rate recorded in two decades.

Hengaw reports that 404 of these executions occurred after the outbreak of the Israel–Iran war on 13 June 2025, indicating a 40 percent surge since the conflict began. Never before have executions crossed the 1,000 mark so quickly within a single year.

The victims included 29 women, 973 men, and one juvenile offender. Eight individuals were executed on charges of espionage for Israel. Authorities also executed at least 33 political or ideological detainees, along with 148 Kurdish, 130 Lor, 114 Baloch, 106 Turk and 65 Afghan prisoners.

Hengaw documented 63 secret executions in which prisoners were denied a final visit with their families. Only about five percent of the cases — 53 executions — were reported by state-controlled media. Public hangings have also increased, with at least seven taking place in Esfarayen, Delfan, Miandoab, Bukan, Damghan, Beyram and Kordkuy.
