Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s capital and surrounding areas have reportedly killed at least 585 people and wounded 1,326 others, according to the Washington-based organization Human Rights Activists (HRA).
The group, known for providing detailed casualty reports during the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests, stated that among the dead are 239 civilians and 126 security personnel.
The Iranian government has not released regular casualty updates throughout the ongoing conflict. Its last official death toll, issued Monday, reported 224 deaths and 1,277 injuries, significantly lower than the figures provided by the human rights group.
The air campaign, now in its sixth day, has caused widespread panic in Tehran, prompting thousands of residents to flee the city.
Israel has claimed the strikes are essential to halt Iran`s alleged progress toward developing a nuclear weapon.
The escalation comes as diplomatic talks between Iran and the United States over Tehran`s nuclear programme were reportedly underway.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously announced a 60-day deadline for negotiations, after which Israel initiated its military response.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes. However, international concerns persist, as Iran has enriched uranium to 60% purity, just a technical step below weapons-grade levels.
Despite the tensions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues limited inspections within Iran.
U.S. intelligence agencies currently assess that Iran is not actively pursuing nuclear weapons, but the ongoing military campaign has significantly heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.
