Modi holds phone talks with Iranian president following US strikes

In a key diplomatic engagement amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a 45-minute phone conversation on Sunday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The talks came shortly after the United States conducted precision strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, intensifying regional instability.

According to reports from Indian media, President Pezeshkian initiated the call following the US attacks on Iran’s Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow nuclear sites.

During the discussion, the Iranian President provided Prime Minister Modi with a detailed update on the evolving situation and described India as a “close ally and partner” in the pursuit of peace and security in West Asia.

Prime Minister Modi expressed grave concern over the rapid escalation and emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation through dialogue and diplomatic efforts.

He reiterated India’s commitment to promoting stability and regional peace that extends beyond national borders.

The call takes place against the backdrop of an ongoing regional crisis, which was initially triggered by the October 2023 attack in Israel.

The conflict has since disrupted critical maritime routes, including the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, due to persistent Houthi rebel attacks, severely impacting global trade through the Red Sea.

India’s trade ties with both Iran and Israel remain significant. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, India exported $1.24 billion worth of goods to Iran and $2.1 billion to Israel, while importing $441.8 million from Iran and $1.6 billion from Israel.

This reflects India’s careful diplomatic balance in maintaining strong relations with both nations despite their adversarial positions.

Analysts caution that further escalation could destabilize not only Iran but also neighboring countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.

With approximately 34 percent of India’s exports passing through the Red Sea, the need for regional stability is critical for India’s trade security and broader strategic interests.

The international community is closely observing India’s diplomatic moves as it navigates this complex geopolitical landscape, striving to uphold peace while safeguarding its strategic and economic priorities.
