A ship carrying migrants drowned in the Mediterranean off the coast of Greece. 500 migrants are still missing in this incident. The United Nations Human Rights Office has given this information in a statement.
Jeremy Lawrence, the spokesman for the organization, said that among the missing people, there are a significant number of women and children. He said it is a terrible incident. This loss of life underscores the need to bring human traffickers to justice.
The boat sank in international waters about 50 nautical miles southwest of Pylos, a coastal town in southern Greece on June 13. After receiving the news, the coast guard of Greece started a rescue operation. In this incident, 79 bodies were recovered by the Coast Guard of Greece.
The boat was on its way from Libya to Italy, carrying migrants to Europe. Most of the passengers are believed to be in their 20s. Survivors said the boat had between 500 and 700 passengers.
Greece`s caretaker prime minister Ioannis Sarmas said an investigation would be conducted based on factual information and technology to determine what caused the boat carrying the migrants to sink.
