U.S. President Donald Trump suggested evacuating the Gaza Strip and relocating its residents to Egypt and Jordan. But both Egypt and Jordan have firmly rejected the idea.
Even the Palestinian group Hamas has turned down the proposal.
According to Reuters, when asked if the relocation would be a short-term or permanent solution, Trump responded, "Both options are possible."
Despite this, both countries have made their stance clear. Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, told reporters that his country is "firm and unwavering" in rejecting any move to displace Palestinians from Gaza.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement rejecting the idea of displacing Palestinians, regardless of whether it’s for a short period or long-term.
Hamas has criticized the proposal as well. Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas` political bureau, told Reuters that Palestinians will never accept such a plan.
"Even if the idea is presented with good intentions, like reconstruction, it won’t be accepted," Naim said.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is backed by Western countries, also made his position clear, stating,
"Our people will stay strong and will not leave their homeland."
