A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 struck southern and central Mexico on Friday, killing at least two people and causing damage in several areas.

The earthquake hit near San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, close to the Pacific coast city of Acapulco, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service.

More than 500 aftershocks were recorded after the main quake.

The shaking interrupted President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press conference of the year as warning alarms went off.

She later continued the briefing once the situation was under control.

Guerrero’s civil defense officials said landslides occurred in and around Acapulco and on highways across the state.

Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed that a 50-year-old woman died when her home collapsed in a small town near the epicenter.

A hospital in the state capital, Chilpancingo, was badly damaged, and patients had to be evacuated.

In Mexico City and Acapulco, people rushed outside as buildings shook.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada said one person died after suffering a medical emergency and falling while leaving a building during the evacuation.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 35 kilometers in a mountainous area of Guerrero, around 57 miles northeast of Acapulco.

A local doctor and human rights activist, José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, said he heard a loud sound before the ground began to shake and noticed dogs barking.

He said the shaking felt weaker than some past earthquakes, but aftershocks continued. Communication was disrupted in some coastal areas, making it hard to reach people there.
