The United States maintains several key bases and military installations in the Gulf, which serve as crucial hubs for its operations and influence in the Middle East.
In Kuwait, the US operates two Air Force Expeditionary Wings, which house squadrons of F-15 and F-16 fighter jets. These bases are front-line assets that can rapidly launch airstrikes when needed.
The US also has a significant airbase in the United Arab Emirates. Like the bases in Kuwait, this facility is equipped with F-15 and F-16 squadrons and provides substantial offensive capabilities in the region. Analysts believe this base could be a primary target if Iran chooses to retaliate.
Another key base is located in Saudi Arabia, further strengthening the US’s military footprint in the Gulf. This base serves as a strategic launch point for air operations across the region.
In Qatar, the Fifth Air Force Expeditionary Wing plays a critical support role. Although it does not have direct offensive capabilities, it provides vital intelligence, surveillance, and aerial refueling support to US and allied forces in the region. Over the past 18 months, the number of US air defense sites in the Gulf has increased, with new installations in Kuwait and plans for an additional missile defense site in Qatar.
