A Dhaka University (DU) staff member, identified as Mustafa Asif, has been granted bail after being arrested on charges of harassing a female student on the campus.

On Thursday, March 6, Mustafa was presented in court, where the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Tawfiq Hassan of Shahbagh Police Station, requested that the accused remain in custody.

However, the defense lawyer argued for bail, and after hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub decided to grant him bail.

According to court sources, the complainant had submitted a request to the police to withdraw the case, which was later presented in court.

The defense team requested bail, and after hearing both sides, the court allowed Mustafa Asif to be released on bail, set at 1,000 Taka.

The incident that led to the arrest took place on Wednesday evening when Mustafa Asif was accused of harassing a female student on her way to the Dhaka University campus.

The student initially reported the matter to the Proctor’s Office and later filed a case at Shahbagh police station.

Dhaka University‍‍`s Proctor, Saifuddin Ahmed, confirmed that the accused harassed the student about her clothing as she was walking on the road.

The student posted about the incident on social media and then filed a formal complaint with the Proctor’s Office.

A group of students later identified Mustafa Asif and brought him to the Proctor’s Office, where he admitted to the harassment.

Following the confession, he was sent to Shahbagh police station, and the library authorities were notified of the incident.

In a surprising twist, a group of individuals staged a sit-in at Shahbagh police station for more than eight hours, demanding the release of Mustafa Asif.

Some of the protesters introduced themselves as members of the ‍‍`Tawhidi Janata‍‍` group during the demonstration.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about harassment and inappropriate behavior in educational institutions, drawing attention to the need for stronger measures to protect students‍‍` rights and dignity.
