Khandker Golam Faruq, the commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said there was a dispute among Bangabazar's businessmen about plans to erect a multi-story commercial structure there.
The investigation will reveal whether that had any bearing on the fire that destroyed the market last week, the Commissioner continued.
The Fire Service and Civil Defense directorate is also looking into the cause of the fire in addition to the police.
The DMP commissioner came up with these remarks in response to queries from media following a session at the FDC in the capital on Saturday.
He added that a total of 11 persons had been detained since the since the Fire Service headquarter was attacked. He described the Bangabazar fire-related attack on the adjoining Fire Service office as "pre-planned."
On April 4, a large fire started at the Bangabazar Market in Dhaka and quickly spread to some other marketplaces nearby, destroying thousands of stores, mostly filled with ready-to-wear clothing and shoes. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured the businessmen to build a high-rise market there, as per one of her advisors Salman F Rahman.
