Khalid launches Sakrain festival

The Sakrain festival is held annually in Old Dhaka on the final days of the Bengali month Poush, continuing a 400-year tradition of Dhaka city.

Sakrain is also famous for kite-flying festival, where residents of the old town fly vibrant kites, set off fireworks, release paper balloons (Fanush), host food festivals, and more.

Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, the state minister for shipping on Saturday inaugurated a kite- flying festival as well as cultural event at Malitola area of the old town in the capital.

He also flew a kite holding Latai – a winding reel or grip wheel to fly a kite.

"Sakrain festival is a traditional and ancient event of old Dhaka," the state minister said.

The people of Dhaka will become more and more tied to tradition and traditional bonding as a result of this type of celebration, Khalid added.

Malitola Service Social Welfare Association organized the program where  Dhaka Metropolitan South unit Awami League General Secretary Md Humayun Kabir was present.

Residents have been enjoying the thrill of kite combat while flying amazing kites in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes to celebrate Sakrain which have started selling in the street stores of Old Dhaka from a few days prior to the festival.
