Awami League mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has won the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election by a huge margin.
According to the unofficially declared results, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury got 1 lakh 18 thousand and 700 votes and was elected. His nearest rival Nazrul Islam Babul of Jatiya Party got 51 thousand 200 votes in plough symbol.
Returning Officer Faisal Quader announced the result at Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in the suburb of the city on Wednesday evening.
After about 10 years, the mayor elected is a leader of Awami League. Former Awami League mayor Badr Uddin Ahmed Kamran served as mayor from 2003 to 2013. Later, BNP`s Ariful Haque Chowdhury was the mayor of Sylhet from 2013 to 2023.
Polling for the city elections started from 8 am today. The election ended at 4 pm in a largely peaceful atmosphere without any major clashes.
Sylhet City elections were expected to be largely uneventful due to the absence of strong opposition candidates and heavy rains. However, the voters finally made the election festive. The Election Commission said that 46 percent of votes were cast in Sylhet City. And as a result of that vote, Awami League regained its position in Sylhet City. The residents got a new leader.
