A woman gave birth to six premature babies—five girls and one boy—via normal delivery at a private hospital in Chattogram city on Saturday afternoon.
The mother, Maryam Begum, originally from Cox`s Bazar, is currently residing in the Hillview area of the port city. The births took place at National Hospital Chattogram, and all six newborns have been admitted to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for close monitoring.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Nazneen Sultana, the obstetrician and gynaecologist who conducted the delivery, confirmed that the babies were delivered naturally.
"Given the number of babies, their birth weights are quite low, which is why they have been placed in the NICU for observation," she said.
Hospital sources confirmed that the babies were born at just 30 weeks of gestation, well before the standard full-term pregnancy period of 37 to 40 weeks.
Jahid Hossain, a medical officer at the NICU, stated that the infants weigh between 600 grams and 1,200 grams.
"A healthy full-term baby typically weighs between 2.5 and 3 kilograms," he noted. "These babies are significantly underweight and premature, which poses several health risks."
While their condition remains stable at the moment, Hossain warned that premature infants are vulnerable to complications, particularly within the first 48 hours after birth.
Attempts to contact Maryam’s husband, Noor Ahmed, were unsuccessful, as the family could not be reached for comment.
This incident marks the second case of multiple premature births in Chattogram in recent weeks. On April 24, a woman named Rikta gave birth to five babies at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
