Amartya Ray, a Vice President (VP) candidate in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, has announced that he will file a petition with the High Court seeking the restoration of his candidacy.
Speaking to The Report, Amartya clarified that he is not challenging the election schedule itself. “There is no question of seeking a postponement of the election. I am filing a petition to reinstate my candidacy,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, reports spread claiming Amartay Ray filed a writ petition with the high court seeking postponement of JUCSU election.
On Saturday (September 6), the JUCSU Election Commission published a notice on the university’s official website announcing the cancellation of Amartya’s candidacy. According to the notice, he was deemed ineligible to be a voter or a candidate under the constitution of the JUCSU and hall union elections. As a result, his name was dropped from both the voter and candidate lists. Amartya was contesting for the VP post under the “Shompritir Oikko” panel.
Meanwhile, the final list of approved candidates for the JUCSU election has already been published. The announcement was made at a press conference at the Senate Hall of the old administrative building by Election Commission member secretary Professor Dr. A.K.M. Rashidul Alam, with commission members Professor Mafruhi Sattar and Professor Kh. Lutful Elahi also present.
As per the election schedule, campaigning began on August 29 and will continue until midnight on September 9. Polling is scheduled for September 11 from 9 am to 5 pm.
The petition, however, has cast uncertainty over whether the election will proceed as planned. All eyes are now on the High Court’s decision.
