Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisers and ministers — Salman F Rahman, Anisul Huq, Dr Dipu Moni, and Kamrul Islam — have been shown arrested in several cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka related to the anti-discrimination movement.
On Monday (May 19), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam granted the prosecution’s petitions to show them arrested in these cases.
Earlier, police sought to show Dr Dipu Moni and Kamrul Islam arrested in the Shahbagh Police Station case over the murder of Monir, and Salman F Rahman and Anisul Huq in the Kadamtali Police Station case over the murder of Masud.
The accused were brought to court from jail in the morning for hearings on the petitions. Investigating officers submitted the requests to show them arrested.
Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki represented the state and supported the petitions. After the hearing, the judge approved the requests. When defense lawyers sought bail for the accused, the court rejected the petitions.
According to the complaint in the Masud murder case, on July 19 last year, during the anti-discrimination movement, protesters had taken position inside a building under construction named Paradise Palace in Mirajnagar under Kadamtali Police Station. Around 7:00 PM, gunfire was opened on them. Masud was shot and later died at 1:30 AM while undergoing treatment.
His wife, Hena Begum, filed a case on September 4 with Kadamtali Police Station naming Sheikh Hasina and 117 others.
In the Monir murder case, on August 5, protesters were holding a demonstration near the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover adjacent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Monir was shot and killed during the incident.
His wife, Ruzina Akter, filed a case on March 14 in court against Sheikh Hasina and 350 others.
