The National Consensus Commission (NCC) held discussions with Khelafat Majlis and Bangladesh Labour Party this morning to gather their opinions over the reform proposals submitted by different commissions.
The meeting took place at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building, reports The Daily Star.
Khelafat Majlis was represented by a delegation led by its Secretary General, Ahmad Abdul Kader, while a 13-member team from the Bangladesh Labour Party, headed by its Chairman, Mostafizur Rahman Iran, also participated.
The discussion was presided over by NCC Vice President Prof Ali Riaz, who also leads the Constitution Reform Commission.
In his welcome speech, he emphasised that the objective was to build consensus among all political parties on key reform issues.
During the meeting, Ahmad Abdul Kader expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to a resolution of disputed issues and pave the way for a new political settlement.
Meanwhile, Mostafizur said his party supported the introduction of a bicameral parliament but opposed dividing the country into four provinces, arguing that such a system would create complications unsuitable for Bangladesh.
He also opposed electing the Union Parishad chairman through votes by members, stating that they should be directly elected by the people, as per the previous system.
Additionally, he stressed the need to strengthen district councils.
Mostafizur further proposed limiting the tenure of the prime minister to two terms and restricting a president from serving two consecutive terms.
His party also suggested a five-year waiting period for retired government officials before they could contest elections.
Furthermore, it proposed that individuals retiring from government service should be eligible to contest elections only five years after retirement.
