Decision on Jamaat, Ishraque after court order: EC Secretary

The Election Commission (EC) will make decisions regarding the reinstatement of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration and BNP leader Ishraq Hossain’s position as mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) only after receiving the official copies of relevant court directives, said Senior EC Secretary Md. Akhtar Hamid today.

Speaking to reporters at the EC headquarters in Agargaon on Sunday, the Secretary responded to multiple questions about the recent court verdicts.

When asked about the court ruling on Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration, he said, “So far, we have not received any official observation or documentation regarding Jamaat’s registration or election symbol. Once we receive the court’s observations, the commission will act accordingly based on legal procedures. If Jamaat is entitled to certain legal rights regarding their symbol or registration, they will receive it—but nothing can be said formally without reviewing the documents.”

Addressing queries about BNP’s Ishraq Hossain, the EC Secretary clarified, “We have not yet received any observations or orders from the court regarding Ishraq. Once we do, the EC will take appropriate action. Until then, we cannot issue any formal statements.”

When reminded that Sunday marks the final day of Ishraq’s mayoral tenure, Akhtar Hamid reiterated, “Whether it’s the first day or the last, the same principle applies—we cannot act or comment until we have the relevant court papers. Only then can the commission deliberate and decide, as per its authority.”

He emphasized that the EC cannot take any institutional stance or make decisions without having the court‍‍`s formal documentation in hand.
