DUCSU VP candidate Jalal Ahmad denied bail, sent to jail

Dhaka University (DU) Central Student Union (DUCSU) independent vice president candidate Jalal Ahmad has been sent to jail after being denied bail in a case of attempted murder.

On Wednesday, September 3, Jalal was produced before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate by Shahbagh Police in connection with the case. The investigating officer, SI Md. Asadul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station, requested that Jalal be kept in custody. Jalal’s lawyers filed a bail petition, which the court rejected, ordering his detention. The Shahbagh Police Station’s General Register Officer, SI Jinnat Ali, confirmed the development.

Jalal, a student of the 2018–2019 session in DU’s Television and Film Department, resided in Room 462 of Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall. According to the police case, late Tuesday night, Jalal allegedly assaulted his roommate, Md. Robiul Haque, using a broken tube light and a wooden chair. Following the incident, the university authorities handed Jalal over to the police. Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall’s provost, Md. Sirajul Islam, filed the attempted murder case at Shahbagh Police Station.

The case statement alleges that Robiul had gone to sleep in his room around midnight when Jalal entered, switched on the light, and began making noise by dragging a chair while uttering “Bikto.” When Robiul asked him to reduce the noise, Jalal became angry, leading to a verbal altercation. During the confrontation, Jalal allegedly struck Robiul’s head with a wooden chair and later hit him with an old broken tube light, causing injuries to his head, chest, and left hand. Robiul was eventually rescued by other students and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

The police request for detention states that Jalal initially admitted to his involvement during questioning. Authorities noted that the investigation is ongoing and that releasing him on bail could hinder the inquiry or allow him to abscond. Considering the severity and sensitive nature of the incident, the court deemed it necessary to keep the accused in custody until the completion of the investigation and verification of his identity.
