Following a similar incident in New York, Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam faced another attack in London when eggs were thrown at his car.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the University of London’s School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS).
Akbar Hossain, Press Minister at the Bangladesh High Commission in the UK, said that Mahfuz Alam attended two events in London that day. In the afternoon, he went to a program at SOAS commemorating the anniversary of the July uprising, jointly organized by SOAS and the High Commission. During the event, 18 activists from the Awami League reportedly gathered outside chanting slogans.
According to the Press Minister’s Facebook post, after the adviser and High Commission officials arrived at the venue, eggs were thrown at their car parked outside by “miscreants.” After the event, as they were leaving in multiple vehicles, two empty High Commission cars were also targeted. Some individuals lay down on the road to block their way, while others threw eggs at the cars. Police intervened to remove those creating obstacles.
Akbar Hossain noted that Mahfuz Alam’s car was not affected while entering the venue, as SOAS had requested tight security in advance. Later, at 7:30 PM, the adviser attended a discussion meeting at the Bangladesh High Commission, where representatives from political parties, students, and journalists were present.
“The London Metropolitan Police is in constant contact with the Bangladesh High Commission and has assured full security for Adviser Mahfuz Alam,” he added.
Earlier, on 24 August in New York, Mahfuz Alam was attacked with eggs and water bottles by overseas Awami League activists while entering the Bangladesh Consulate for a July uprising commemoration event. Police removed the activists, and the Consulate General requested local authorities and the US State Department to take action against the perpetrators.
