The Investigation Agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally launched an investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity committed by the Awami League as a political party during the suppression of the recent student and public uprisings.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed on Tuesday that an officer has already been assigned to lead the investigation. He added that if evidence implicates other political parties, they too will face similar legal measures.
Speaking at a briefing at the ICT premises in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, Tajul Islam said,
“The process of examining allegations against the Awami League as a political organization had been underway. Now the formal investigation has begun. An investigation officer has been appointed and will complete the work as quickly as possible. Based on the report, appropriate legal action will be taken against the Awami League as a party.”
The move marks the first time in Bangladesh’s history that a political party is being investigated as an entity under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act for alleged crimes against humanity.
