Bangladesh’s upcoming parliamentary election and referendum on February 12 will see a crowded contest, with more than two thousand candidates competing across the country, Election Commission officials said.
According to the commission, a total of 2,034 candidates are in the race, including 275 independent contenders. Fifty-one political parties are taking part in the election.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has nominated the highest number of candidates. A total of 291 BNP candidates are contesting under the paddy sheaf symbol. Islami Andolon Bangladesh follows with 258 candidates using the hand fan symbol.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has fielded 229 candidates with the scale symbol, while the Jatiya Party has nominated 198 candidates contesting with the plough symbol.
The National Citizen Party has entered 32 candidates, who are running under the water lily bud symbol. Among independent contenders, the football symbol is the most common, with 76 candidates using it.
Candidate numbers also vary by constituency. Dhaka-12 has the highest number of contestants, with 15 candidates, while Pirojpur-1 has the lowest, with only two candidates in the race.
