In a major political development, two key advisors from the interim government, Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, are set to resign before the formation of a new political party led by students and the masses, inspired by the July Revolution.
Nahid Islam, the Information Advisor, and Asif Mahmud, the Youth and Sports Advisor, are expected to step down from their government positions by February 15.
Another advisor, Mahfuz Alam, may also follow suit and resign in June. This information has been reported by Dainik Amar Desh.
The new political party, which has roots in the student-led movement of the July Revolution, plans to announce its leadership committee soon.
According to sources, Nahid Islam will likely serve as the member secretary of this committee.
The constitution of the new student-led party is still under development.
In a recent statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir raised concerns that it would not be acceptable for student representatives to remain in government while forming a political party and participating in elections.
Nahid Islam responded to these concerns, stating that if he joined the political party, he would leave the government.
His comment has stirred considerable debate within the political circles.
Leaders of the National Citizens` Committee have emphasized Nahid Islam’s significant role in the movement from the beginning.
He was also a key figure in announcing the demands of the July-August uprising, making him popular among students and the general public.
At a recent meeting of the National Citizens` Committee, a majority of the members voiced their opinion that one or more student advisors should resign from their positions in the interim government.
They believe that student representatives with high public support should step down and take on leadership roles in the new political party.
Ariful Islam Adib, Joint Convener of the National Citizens` Committee, expressed his views to the media, saying,
“The martyrs, the injured, and the hopes of the people from the July uprising are that those who led the revolution should resign from the government and lead the new political movement. Therefore, I urge the student representatives in the government to honor the people`s aspirations and take charge of this new political initiative.”
Adib further added,
“The farmers, workers, students, and the general public of Bangladesh are eagerly waiting for the revolutionaries to take the lead. Just as the fascist and murderous Hasina was brought down, the student community will drive out fascist collaborators from all sectors of the state and work towards building a humane, welfare-oriented society.”
While the decision on which student advisors will resign has not been finalized, Samanta Sharmin, spokesperson for the National Citizens` Committee, confirmed that discussions are ongoing.
She did, however, make one thing clear: any student advisor who remains in the government will not be allowed to join the new political party.
To become part of the political initiative, they must first resign from the government.
The National Citizens` Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, both instrumental in the July uprising, plan to announce the formation of the new political party by February 15.
They are currently working on a 24-point manifesto, with a 17-member committee in charge of preparing it.
