Shibir labels allegation of pre-marked ballot at DUCSU polls as ‘conspiracy’

An independent candidate at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections has alleged that a ballot paper was found with pre-marked votes for a panel backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Rupaiya Shrestha Tanchangya, a candidate for Career Development Secretary from the Independent Students’ Unity, told The Report around 12:30 pm that one of her friends received a ballot at the TSC polling center cafeteria room, which already had crosses marked beside the names of Shibir-backed Vice President (VP) candidate Abu Sadiq Kayem and General Secretary (GS) candidate SM Forhad.

She said her friend immediately reported the issue to polling officials, but was told it could have been her own mistake.

Polling officer Rumana Parvin Anee later said that the student had entered the booth with the ballot paper and returned shortly after, claiming it was already marked.

The ballot was then replaced. She added that all other ballot papers were checked and no such markings were found, suggesting it might have been an error on the student’s part.

Anee further said that when the ballots were delivered in the morning, university officials, polling agents, and law enforcement personnel were present. “The ballot boxes were sealed in front of everyone, leaving no scope for irregularities,” she added.

Shibir-backed VP candidate Abu Sadiq Kayem dismissed the allegation, calling it a conspiracy to discredit the election.

“A vested quarter is trying to derail the polls through such tactics,” he told. “We have also heard of a pre-marked ballot with crosses beside Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal candidates in Ekushey Hall, and now another similar claim at TSC.”

He said those responsible for any irregularities should face strict action, and their political affiliations should be revealed.

Meanwhile, Returning Officer Professor Nasrin Sultana, in charge of the TSC center, said all polling activities are being monitored through CCTV cameras.

“The student lodged her complaint after leaving the booth with the ballot paper. The footage is being reviewed, and further details will be shared after verification,” she added.
