Austria started their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over debutants Jordan, securing all three points in a hard-fought Group J encounter at Bay Arena in San Francisco.
Jordan, making their first-ever appearance on football’s biggest stage, put up a spirited fight but were ultimately outclassed.
Austria applied early pressure and took the lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, going into halftime 1-0 ahead.
Jordan responded strongly after the break and levelled the score in the 50th minute through Noor Al-Rawabdeh, marking a historic World Cup goal for the debutants.
Austria thought they had regained the lead in the 67th minute when Marko Arnautović found the net, but the goal was disallowed after VAR ruled a handball in the build-up involving Stefan Posch.
Jordan’s resistance eventually broke in the 76th minute when a corner led to an own goal by Yazan Al-Arab, putting Austria back in front.
In stoppage time (100th minute), Arnautović sealed the victory from the penalty spot, confirming a 3-1 win for Austria.
The result sees Austria join Argentina on three points in Group J, while Jordan were left empty-handed despite a determined debut performance.
