Four people were burnt in a chemical drum explosion in Dhaka`s Agargaon area this morning. The injured were rushed to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
They injured are: Rafiqul Islam, 19, Mozaffar Haque, 26, Saralal Das, 45, and Rafiqul Islam, 35.
The accident occured as they were working in the basement of an under-construction building in Taltola around 9:30am.
According to Mozaffar, the chemical drum was brought to the basement and used as a water storage container. An explosion occurred when workers began cutting the upper half of the drum with a grinding machine, resulting in the fire.
Four of the workers were burned, he said.
The injured suspected that gas had built inside the drum, causing an explosion when it came into contact with the spark produced by the grinding machine.
According to Tariqul Islam, the institute`s resident surgeon, Rafiqul sustained burns on both hands, legs, and sections of his body, while the three others received less severe injuries.
He said everyone was kept under observation.
