A former student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has sent a legal notice to Mufti Amir Hamza, a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Kushtia unit, demanding a public apology for what he described as “false, defamatory and motivated” comments about the university at recent religious gatherings.

Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan — a Supreme Court lawyer, former Senate member and alumnus of Jahangirnagar University — sent the notice on Tuesday.

Citing newspaper reports, online news portals and YouTube videos, the notice said Amir Hamza falsely claimed to be a former student of JU’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies and alleged that residential students “rinse with alcohol in the morning” and “beat up teachers with sticks.”

According to the notice, such remarks have tarnished the university’s long-standing reputation and triggered strong reactions among students and guardians.

The legal notice demanded that Amir Hamza issue an unconditional public apology within 48 hours. It also called on the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take steps to remove the defamatory video content about Jahangirnagar University from YouTube and other platforms.

Failing to comply could result in both criminal proceedings and a civil suit seeking compensation, the notice warned.
