Voting is underway for the by-elections of 28 local government units at different parts of the country. Voters are experiencing their suffrage to elect the Mayor, Chairman and Councilors of four city corporations, 12 upazila parishads, five municipalities and six union parishads.
Starting from 8am Thursday (October 7) the voting will continue till 4pm this afternoon.
Additional members of the law enforcing agencies have been deployed to ensure peaceful and fair polls.
Out of the five municipalities, Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is being used at the mayoral post’s race in Godagari municipality of Rajshahi while five wards of the four city corporations are also in the array.
Balloting is being also held among the contesters to break ties at multiple wards of six UPs under the EVM system.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated no candidate centrally, but the party leaders are running at different posts in this election.
In the Godagari municipality, Awami League nominated candidate Ayez Uddin Bishwas is fighting the wife of former mayor Jannatul Ferdous.
Besides, municipality BNP unit general secretary Golam Kibria Rulu, former mayor and Jamaat leader Aminul Islam are also on the candidate list. Though Aminul Islam later declared to walk over the voting, his name is still on the ballot.
