The High Court has issued a ruling asking why the martyrs of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement from July-August should not be recognized as national heroes.
The court also inquired why the families of these victims should not receive financial benefits similar to those provided to the families of freedom fighters.
The ruling was made by a bench comprising Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque during a preliminary hearing on a writ petition.
The cabinet secretary and the secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, among others, have been summoned to respond to the ruling.
Senior lawyers Zainul Abedin, Advocate Raihan Alam, and Advocate Zakia Humaira Tama represented the petition in court.
Previously, Ali Najer, a resident of the Cantonment area in Dhaka, filed the writ petition, requesting that the victims of the July-August student uprising be declared national heroes.
