The outgoing vice-chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Shireen Akhtar appointed 37 employees including 6 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders on her last working day, reportedly without following recruitment rules and regulations.
Following the announcement of the new vice-chancellor`s appointment, she hired them on a blind date, Tuesday afternoon into the evening, for a variety of third and fourth class positions.
There are six individuals connected to Chhatra League politics, seven live in the neighborhood of Fatepur Union, which is nearest to the university.
Among the ruling pary`s student wing appointees: former vice-presidents of CU unit Chhatra League Abu Bakar, Ibnul Newaz, Joint Secretary Shamima Akhter, former Social Service Affairs Secretary Ibrahim Hossain alias Saddam, former Chhatra League activists Naeem Azad and Badal Kanti Chakma. All of them have been appointed as third class employees.
In accordance with university policy, a notification must be sent out to fill any vacancy. After scrutinizing the applications, candidates must take an oral or practical exam. Those who pass the exams later on are forwarded to the university Syndicate for approval of the application for a recruiting recommendation.
Although the appointments made by Shireen Akhtar were finally approved by the Syndicate but the rules were not followed.
In the last three months, she has appointed at least 105 persons using the same procedure. She nominated people one after the other as the teachers` association began to demonstrate to remove her from her position as the chief of the university.
