UGC turns off admission in 4 private universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced closure of new admission in all programs of four private universities of the country.

The universities are Primeasia University, Stamford University Bangladesh, ASA University and Victoria University of Bangladesh.

Dr AKM Shamsul Arefin, Director of Public Relations and Right to Information Department of UGC on Thursday sent a press release notifying the development.

According to the handout of UGC, no progress has been made in setting up permanent campuses of those four universities.

However, all other regular academic activities of the private universities will be continued. They will not be able to admit new students from January this year.

The temporary campuses of State University and Manarat International University will no longer accept new students. However, programs at these two institutes’ permanent campuses will continue as usual, the UGC letter added.

Apart from this, in view of the visible progress regarding the construction of permanent campus, Dhaka International University, Royal University, Southeast University, City University, The Millennium University and Bangladesh University have been given time till March 31 to completely transfer the academic activities to the permanent campus.

If all programs, including academic activities, are not transferred to the permanent campus within the specified time frame, admission to all programs will be stopped from April 1. At the same time, all temporary campuses or buildings except the permanent campus of these universities will be considered illegal, the UGC letter stated.

Considering the visible progress and written commitment regarding the construction and transferring activities to the permanent campus, BRAC University, University of Development Alternative, Green University, Uttara University, Presidency University and The People's University will get time till June 30 to transfer all activities in the permanent campus.

If these universities fail to transfer all programs to the permanent campus within the stipulated time frame, the admission of new students in all programs will be completely stopped from July 1. At the same time, all campuses or buildings except the permanent campuses of these universities will be considered illegal, the UGC handout furthered.
