This year, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary Branco, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their pioneering research on peripheral immune tolerance.
Peripheral immune tolerance is a process in the body that prevents unwanted or excessive immune responses against its own components (self-antigens) and harmless foreign substances, such as certain food elements or beneficial gut bacteria.
This mechanism is crucial for maintaining immune system balance and preventing autoimmune reactions.
The winners were announced on Monday at 3:30 PM Bangladesh time by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Nobel laureates will each receive a medal, a diploma, and a total prize amount of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million or 146.1 million Bangladeshi taka). In cases where multiple laureates share the prize in a category, the award money is divided among them.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is announced annually by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, while the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry.
As in previous years, an online special program by Bigganchinta will cover the Nobel Prize in science. Updates can be followed on their website, Facebook page, and group.
