Dengue cases and deaths rise in 2025 compared to last year: Health ministry

Dengue infections in Bangladesh have increased significantly in 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday (19 July).

The report, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Md Saiful Islam Majumder, is based on data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The report provides a month-by-month comparison between 2024 and 2025. In 2024, the total number of hospitalized dengue patients was relatively low in the first half of the year — 1,055 in January, 339 in February, 311 in March, 504 in April, 644 in May, 798 in June, and 2,669 in July.

The death toll during that period included 14 deaths in January, followed by 3 in February, 5 in March, 2 in April, 12 in May, 8 in June, and 12 in July.

In contrast, 2025 has already recorded higher numbers in each corresponding month. This year, hospital admissions due to dengue were 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, and a sharp increase to 5,951 in June.

By 19 July alone, 6,429 more patients had been admitted to hospitals. The death toll so far in 2025 includes 10 deaths in January, 3 in February, 7 in April, 3 in May, and 19 each in both June and the first 19 days of July.

As of Saturday (19 July), a total of 16,789 people have been hospitalized due to dengue across the country this year, with 62 confirmed deaths.
