Two people died of dengue in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 127, according to Wednesday’s bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
During the same period, 445 new patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue, bringing the total number of hospitalizations this year to 32,946.
Of the latest fatalities, one occurred at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the other at Barguna 250-bed Hospital. Both victims were women, aged 35 and 55.
DGHS data shows the highest number of deaths this year occurred in July, with 41 fatalities, followed by 39 in August. Nineteen people died in June, 10 in January, three in February, seven in April, and three in May. No deaths were recorded in March, while the first three days of September have already seen five deaths.
Hospitalization figures also peaked in July, when 10,684 patients were admitted. Other monthly admissions included 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August. By September 3, another 1,470 patients had been admitted.
In the last 24 hours, 146 of the new admissions came from Dhaka’s two city corporation areas. Outside the capital, 69 patients were admitted in other districts of Dhaka division, 16 in Mymensingh, 98 in Chattogram, 21 in Rajshahi, six in Rangpur, and 78 in Barishal.
Currently, 1,589 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals across the country — 519 in Dhaka and 1,070 outside the capital.
Bangladesh began keeping official records of dengue cases in 2000. The worst outbreak so far occurred in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalized and 1,705 lives were lost to the disease — the highest annual toll on record.
