Is Chattogram becoming a divisional covid-19 hotspot amid new wave?

Bangladesh is witnessing a mild resurgence of Covid-19 infections, and the Chattogram division appears to be at the forefront of this new wave.

Recent data shows that this southeastern region is reporting the highest number of new cases compared to other divisions in the country.

The Civil Surgeon of Chattogram, Dr. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, confirmed that six Covid-related deaths have occurred in the district so far this month.

Two more fatalities were reported on Monday at Apollo Imperial Hospital in Chattogram city. The deceased included an 80-year-old man from Noakhali district and a 95-year-old woman residing in the Firingi Bazar area of Chattogram. Both patients suffered from severe pneumonia and deteriorated rapidly despite treatment.

In just the past three days, five people have succumbed to the virus in Chattogram, marking a concerning rise in mortality.

According to the Civil Surgeon’s office report, four new Covid-19 positive cases were detected within 24 hours, three of which were city residents.

Testing efforts remain robust, with 120 samples analyzed across seven government and private hospitals and diagnostic centers in the last day alone.

This month, a total of 78 individuals in Chattogram have tested positive for Covid-19, with the majority—69—residing within the city limits, while the remaining nine are from surrounding upazilas.

This concentration of cases in the urban center highlights Chattogram city as a possible emerging hotspot.

In response to the increasing cases, the government has designated Chattogram General Hospital as a dedicated Covid-19 treatment center to manage the growing number of patients requiring care.

Chattogram’s situation contrasts with other divisions in Bangladesh, where case numbers remain relatively low or stable.

Experts attribute the surge in Chattogram to factors such as population density, mobility, and possibly reduced adherence to Covid-19 safety protocols.

However, no specific variant or outbreak source has been reported as the cause yet. The government has designated Chattogram General Hospital for Covid treatment to manage the rising cases, indicating proactive measures in response to the situation.

The ongoing wave is milder compared to previous surges, but health officials urge vigilance to prevent further escalation.

Public health campaigns continue to stress vaccination, mask-wearing, and social distancing, particularly in urban hotspots like Chattogram.

As the nation watches closely, the developments in Chattogram will be critical in shaping the country’s Covid-19 response in the coming weeks.

The rise in cases and deaths serves as a reminder that the pandemic remains a threat, and proactive measures are essential to safeguard public health.
