Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced a ban on the serving and consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, and public places across the state.

The decision was made during a meeting of the state’s cabinet on Wednesday. Sarma explained that they were amending existing laws regarding beef and introducing new rules to tighten the regulations.

“We have decided that beef will no longer be served in any restaurant or hotel in Assam. Additionally, it will not be allowed at any public events or in public spaces. Starting from yesterday, this decision is in effect,” said Sarma during a press conference.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that while there used to be a restriction on serving beef near temples, the new ban extends to all public areas. This means beef cannot be consumed in any restaurant, hotel, or public place throughout Assam.
