UN Chief urges calm ahead of Bangladesh elections

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called on all sides in Bangladesh to remain calm and avoid violence as the country prepares for elections in February.

He urged people to reduce tensions and show maximum restraint to ensure a peaceful election period.

The UN chief strongly condemned the killing of youth protest leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi and expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.

He also urged Bangladeshi authorities to carry out a quick, fair, and impartial investigation into the killing, in line with international human rights standards.
