A journalist died of a suspected heart attack while covering the Dhaka University Central Students` Union (DUCSU) election at Curzon Hall on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Tarikul Shibli (40), a city reporter for Channel S Television.
Witnesses said Shibli collapsed suddenly while broadcasting live from inside Curzon Hall around 1:30 pm. Colleagues rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
His colleague Sohel Rana said, “He was live on air when he suddenly fell unconscious. We immediately took him to DMCH, but the doctors could not save him.”
Shibli hailed from Etbarpur village in Burichang upazila of Cumilla district. He was the son of A K M Shahidullah and lived with his family in Uttara’s Diabari area. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of DMCH police camp, confirmed the death, saying the body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the local police station has been informed.
“Doctors suspect he died of a heart attack. The exact cause will be confirmed after the autopsy,” Faruk added.
