15kms tailback on both sides of Bangabandhu Bridge

A 15 kilometres long tailback was created on both sides of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj as number of North Bengal-bound vehicles increased on the highway ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

According to the police and travellers, the traffic congestion continued till Friday noon.

They said although the traffic condition on the highways are normal, congestion started after the Bangabandhu Bridge.

It takes some three to four hours to Hatikumrul intersection of Sirajganj from Bangabandhu Bridge, said transport drivers.

Md Mosaddek Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West police station, said:" The numbers of north-bound vehicles have increased two times than the usual. However, the situation was not that of a complete gridlock as the traffic is moving slowly."

Md Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station, said: " The gridlock has been created on the 25-km road from Bangabandhu Bridge West to Hatikumrul for some days due to renovation work."

"Vehicular movement has already started through one lane of the newly constructed bridge in Nalka area and roads have been widened at various places on the highway ahead of Eid.  But, this situation was created because of the pressure of additional vehicles," he added.

Traffic congestion was seen in the early hours on the eastern link road of Bangabandhu Bridge as the pressure of north Bengal-bound vehicles increased since Thursday night, said locals.

After 9 am on Friday, the vehicles were moving at a slow pace, they added.
