Four people, including three school students, lost their lives in separate lightning strike incidents in Kishoreganj’s Pakundia and Mithamoin upazilas on Tuesday.
The three students—Irina Akhtar, Priya Akhtar, and Borsha, all aged 15—were struck by lightning in the Chorteki area of Pakundia while returning home from school, according to local authorities.
They were ninth-grade students at Chorteki Girls School and College and residents of the same village.
Md Billal Hossain, the Pakundia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), said the girls were critically injured and taken to the Pakundia Upazila Health Complex, where Irina and Priya were declared dead. Borsha, who was in critical condition, was transferred to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
UNO Billal added that the administration is in touch with the victims’ families and will assist with burial and funeral expenses.
In a separate incident, a farmer named Kadu Mia was killed by lightning in the South Hati village of Mithamoin’s Ghagra Union. According to Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam of Mithamoin Police Station, Kadu had gone to an open field to dry rice.
As rain began suddenly, he rushed to gather the drying crop but was struck by lightning. Locals took him to the Mithamoin Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Authorities are urging people to remain indoors during thunderstorms to avoid similar tragedies.
