A seven-year-old boy was hacked to death in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga on Saturday for allegedly stealing Tk10.
The incident occurred at 2am at Kanaidanga village in Karpasdanga union of the upazila.
The deceased is identified as Yamin Hossain, hailed from Joyrampur village in Mujibnagar upazila.
According to locals, Yamin used to live with his grandfather Abdur Razzaque in Kanaidanga village after his parent's separation.
On Saturday, Yamin and his brother Emon were playing with their friends in a mango orchard near their house.
At that time, Zahid Hasan, 16, son of ward-7 Union Parishad (UP) member Ashadul Islam, came and gave Yamin Tk30 to buy some puffed rice from the shop.
When Yamin could not return the remaining Tk10 after the purchase, Zahid got angry and started beating him after tying him up with a tree.
Scared by the incident, Emon rushed to his house and informed family members.
However, when they reached the spot they found the throat-slit body of Yamin while Zahid fled.
Ferdous Wahid, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Model police station, said: “The body was recovered but the sharp weapon used in the murder could not be seized yet.”
The body was sent for an autopsy and efforts are on to arrest Zahid, he added.
